The citizens of Vlora protested this Monday in front of the city hall, in a sign of revolt over the lack of drinking water that has affected most of the city for five days.
Frustrated by the prolonged situation, protesters have accused institutions of mismanagement and abuse of public funds. “They have stolen 50 million euros in investments from the water supply. If no one comes to give us a solution, we will come down and block the main road,” said one citizen. Another warned of the danger to public health: “May God kill them, we are on the verge of an epidemic.”
Even though we are on the eve of the holidays, the citizens of Vlora have been without drinking water for four to five days, an unusual and alarming situation, which has not yet been resolved by the Water Supply Company. The lack of water has also led to the suspension of the activities of dozens of businesses in the city.
Today's protest, on December 29, took place in front of the municipality premises, where the police were also present. The situation became tense after the protesters slammed the doors of the institution and tried to enter the building. "We want water", "The mayor should come", "Open the doors of the municipality", were the calls that could be heard in the background. "To wash, because there is no drinking water in all of Albania", declared one of the protesters.
Tensions began on Sunday, when citizens flooded the city's "Petro Marko" Theater, preventing a concert from taking place. Due to the situation, the artists were forced to leave the stage and the event was canceled. Police intervened at the scene, escorting several people.
Citizens warn of an escalation of protests if the water supply problem is not urgently resolved.
