Anti-diabetes and obesity drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy have revolutionized the treatment of diabetes and weight loss, but researchers are now also investigating the potential effects on vision.
A new research project called "Godot", led by the University of Padua, is analyzing whether these drugs could be linked in rare cases to retinal damage, macular degeneration or permanent vision loss.
According to researchers, suspicions have been raised following international pharmacovigilance signals and several reported cases, including that of British singer Robbie Williams.
Scientists are investigating whether the very rapid lowering of blood sugar from these drugs can cause damage to the small blood vessels in the eyes, especially in more fragile patients.
The study will include 68 patients with diabetes, who will be monitored before and after starting therapy with GLP-1 agonists, through highly advanced ocular imaging technologies.
However, researchers emphasize that for the vast majority of patients, the benefits of these drugs continue to far outweigh the risks.
