Activists and representatives of the parent community were confronted today with the refusal of the principal of the "Fan Noli" school to allow the placement of a monument in memory of Martin Cani, the 14-year-old who was killed by a peer near this school.
According to them, the entrance was blocked with the argument that permission for the bench was missing, although parents and activists claim that the initiative was approved at the City Council meeting and has also received approval from the education office.
Activist Sideorela Vatnikaj expressed her disappointment at the situation, stating that the principal did not come out to communicate, but called the police to remove them. According to her, Martin Can's parents were also present at the scene, who, as she pointed out, in addition to not receiving justice for the loss of their son, are also facing bureaucratic obstacles.
"We are very disappointed and hurt that this issue is dragging on. We have been told that the principal has not come out at any point, but has called the police to remove us by force. We have not been given any reason why the bench should not be installed, while the City Council and the education office have approved it," said Vatnikaj.
She added that the school principal, as responsible for the safety of students, should have been the first to be interested in a symbolic act that, according to her, would serve to raise awareness among children.
The murder of Martin Cani occurred on November 18, 2024, about 200 meters from the "Fan Noli" school in Tirana. The conflict between the two teenagers had started a few days earlier inside the school premises for weak motives and, although it seemed to have died down, it flared up again before the tragic event.
