Sali Berisha publicly attacked Agron Shehaj today during a question-and-answer session with his followers on Facebook, after he was asked why Shehaj had refused to participate in the opposition dialogue table called by the Democratic Party. In his response, Berisha not only justified the invitation for opposition unity, but turned Shehaj's refusal into a political accusation.
Berisha left the responsibility for the explanation to Shehaj himself, but accompanied this with a direct political and moral accusation.
According to him, Shehaj is making an unacceptable comparison between the DP and the Socialist Party, calling himself persecuted and equating a political force that "liberated from prisons and persecution" with another that, according to Berisha, "persecuted his predecessors."
"Everyone is free to say whatever they want," Berisha said, "but I have a clear conviction: the voters who voted for Agron Shehaj did not do so so that he would refuse to unite in a broad opposition front to remove the greatest evil, Edi Rama."
The DP leader took the criticism further, labeling as problematic any stance that, according to him, fragments the opposition. “Those who want to make the opposition the opposition are actually in the service of someone else,” Berisha declared, implying that the rejection of opposition cooperation ultimately serves Edi Rama’s government.
