The Together for Life organization called on the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to guarantee the continuation of services for patients in the southeast with immediate health needs, in the conditions of a four-day traffic blockage in the cities affected by landslides on the Librazhd-Prrenjas axis.
The non-profit organization Together for Life, which deals with the protection of human rights and mainly of vulnerable groups, has reacted to the traffic jam situation in southeast Albania, which is affecting the well-being and health of patients who need to travel via the national axis Librazhd-Prrenjas.
They call on the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to respond immediately with a concrete and implementable plan of measures to ensure that patients receive the service so that their health is not jeopardized.
"To guarantee the continuity of health services for patients in the southeastern area of the country, which has been isolated for days due to the collapse of a segment of the national road, part of Corridor 8, in the village of Dragostunjë, Librazhd," reads the response from Together for Life.
Since February 21, the Librazhd-Prrenjas axis continues to be closed due to landslides and earthworks, thus causing a traffic paralysis in the southeast of the country.
The blockage of this road axis has interrupted hundreds of patients' access to specialized health services in Tirana, seriously endangering their health and lives.
According to Together for Life, some of the patients who seriously risk their health are those with renal insufficiency, who need regular hemodialysis sessions in Tirana; patients of the oncology hospital who have scheduled chemotherapy sessions; patients who have scheduled surgical interventions; or even those with other health emergencies who require treatment in Tirana.
"Any delay in treatment for these categories of patients translates into a deterioration in their health condition, an increased risk of serious complications and, in some cases, a risk to life," reads the public statement from Together for Life.
Together for Life called on the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to organize National Emergency structures to guarantee immediate access to necessary health services.
"In conditions where an entire area of the country remains isolated, the institutional response cannot be delayed," the organization's representatives said. /BIRN/
