The art of playing, singing and building the lute, one of the most precious treasures of Albanian cultural identity, has been officially included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List, in the category of elements requiring immediate protection.
This unique art, cultivated for centuries in rural Albanian areas, constitutes an essential dimension of the national cultural memory. The lute, together with the Epic of the Kreshniks and the ballads of the northern tradition, has traditionally served as a means of transmitting the virtues of bravery, endurance, faith, honor and hospitality. This rich heritage has been passed down from generation to generation in the regions of Malësia e Madhe, Dukagjini, Malësia e Gjakova, Rugova, Drenica, Plav and Gucia.
The recognition by UNESCO comes as a result of a long and rigorous research process, led by researchers Vaso Tole, Shaban Sinani, Rigers Halili, Armanda Hysa and Susane Ogge. In close collaboration with local communities, through field research and detailed documentation, they prepared a dossier of the highest standards, which was submitted to UNESCO in March 2024.
The inclusion of the lute on the international list not only places this unique tradition at the center of global attention, but also emphasizes the urgency of its preservation, in order to ensure the continuity of a rare symbol of Albanian identity.
Albania has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection, promotion and strengthening of this precious asset, keeping open cooperation with Kosovo and other cultural actors at the regional level.
