Following the decision of the Tirana Court that sentenced the minor to 16 years in prison for the murder of Martin Cani and the injury of Luis Mecaj, the victim's family has also reacted through a press statement, stating that justice has finally spoken clearly.
"Today, after a year of pain that cannot be described in words, we — the family of Martin Can — have seen for the first time a strong ray of justice," the statement said.
The family appreciates the fact that the court did not follow the recommendation of the Prosecution, which had treated the event as a single criminal offense, but recognized it as two separate offenses: the murder of Martin and the attempted murder of Luis.
"This decision is a courageous, professional and fair act. It is a realistic assessment of what happened: two children stabbed, two separate acts of violence, two separate criminal intentions," the Cani family said.
In response, they thank the jury for the integrity and honesty shown during the process, emphasizing that the decision does not return their son, but gives them the feeling that Martin's life was treated with the weight and dignity it deserved.
"This decision cannot bring Martin back to us, but it gives us a deep sense that our pain was not ignored and that his life was treated with dignity," the statement said.
The Cani family also announces that it will continue the mission in memory of Martin through three concrete initiatives: the creation of the "Martin Cani" Museum as a place of remembrance and education, the production of a film about his life, and the establishment of the "Martin Cani" Foundation, which will be committed to the safety of children in schools.
In the end, the family members thank the citizens for their continued support and conclude the reaction with the message: "Today, justice spoke clearly for Martin Can."
