On Sunday, 334,539 citizens in five municipalities of the country will head to the ballot boxes to elect new mayors. The Central Election Commission has already distributed election materials in Vlora, Berat, Cërrik, Mat and Tepelena, while the State Police has set up a detailed plan of measures for the smooth running of the process.
There are 612 police officers who will guarantee order and security in 9 CEAZ facilities and 473 voting centers, as well as accompany election materials. The police call on citizens to report any case of attempted vote buying or alienation.
These elections mark the quietest and most unusual campaign in recent years, as major rallies and the presence of key political leaders, Edi Rama and Sali Berisha, were absent. In the race, the Socialist Party faces independent candidates supported by the opposition.
In Vlora, Brunilda Mersini (SP) is challenged by Dionis Sota and Gjergj Nika; in Berat, Ervin Ceca (SP) is competing against Pavlo Shkarpa; in Mat, Altin Bojni faces Suzana Pasha and Eduart Brahilika; in Cërrik, Florenc Doka (SP) is facing Amarildo Hoxha and Eligert Hima; while in Tepelena, Gramoz Sako (SP) is challenged by Gabriel Guma.
The mayors who emerge from these elections will have a temporary mandate of one and a half years, until the local elections in the spring of 2027.
