Elisa Spiropali, in the position of Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, lied during an interview on Top Channel with journalist Grida Duma regarding Albania's vote in the United Nations General Assembly for the resolution that paves the way for the creation of the state of Palestine.
Spiropali stated that Albania had followed a “sovereign policy” by abstaining from the vote, since — according to her — there was no unified position of the European Union countries on this resolution. But the documented facts from the vote at the UN refute this claim.
At the session of September 13, 2025, all European Union countries voted in favor of the resolution, with the exception of the Czech Republic, which abstained. Albania did the same, aligning itself not with Western European countries, but with the Czech Republic — a country with which it has no political, diplomatic or significant bilateral ties.
This position also contradicts the statements of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who in April 2025, during his visit to Israel, had publicly emphasized: “Albania has always been a supporter of the two-state solution.” But at the UN, Tirana abstained, refusing to support a resolution that not only paves the way for the recognition of the Palestinian state, but also condemns the Israeli aggression against civilians and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The seven-page resolution, approved by 142 votes in favor, 10 against and 12 abstentions, was drafted after an international conference in July, hosted by Saudi Arabia and France. The United States and Israel were among the few to vote against.
Instead of reinforcing the European foreign policy line and the position declared by the Prime Minister himself, Albania chose a neutral position that is an open vassalage to the US position that speaks more of political uncertainty than of "sovereignty."
