Ilir Alimehmeti stated that the meetings held by Ervin Salianji with the grassroots structures have served as an "awakening" for the Democratic Party, which, according to him, had fallen into a state of slumber after last year's elections.
In an interview with News24, Alimehmeti stated that he maintains constant contact with the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, even though there may be different opinions between them about how the party should act.
"Every opposition meeting has its own value, every meeting with other parties has value, as long as we have a common denominator which is the overthrow of the government, every organization has value. I have constant meetings with the leader of the DP, I cooperate with everyone in the DP and in the opposition. We may have different opinions on how to do the best, the important thing is to have a common denominator. The truth is that there was a lethargy and there was a need for an awakening, which was achieved. We managed to go to the grassroots", he said.
Alimehmeti and Salianji were the initiators of the meetings with the democrats at the grassroots level, an initiative that created quite a few concerns within the ranks of the Democratic Party leadership. After reactions and criticism from Berisha and other DP leaders, Alimehmeti no longer appeared in these meetings. Meanwhile, Salianji has been declared an “enemy” within the party and has been expelled from the DP Presidency.
