The newly elected Democratic Party MP, Gjin Gjoni, has issued direct accusations against the President of the Supreme Court, Sokol Sadushi, accusing him of a lack of transparency in declaring his assets and of concealing his period of work before the '90s.
"If you refer to Sokol Sadushi's CV at the Supreme Court, or that pioneer scarf, which for me are symbols of communism, such a judge could not be the president of the Supreme Court. In his CV he writes that he was a former prosecutor, member of the Constitutional Court, lecturer, lawyer, director of the School of Magistrates, but he starts from 1991 and does not give the period before '90. He should show where he worked as a prosecutor. Former prosecutors and investigators from before the '90s should not be in the system today," Gjoni declared in an interview for Syri TV.
The Democratic MP also accused that Sokol Sadushi's wealth "has never been made public" and that it "is not given to the media, journalists or anyone else." He stressed that the High Judicial Council "does not even bother to call him for clarification."
Meanwhile, Gjin Gjoni himself has had a controversial past with the justice system. In 2014, he was criminally charged by the High Inspectorate for Declaration and Control of Assets (ILDKPI) for false declaration, forgery of documents and laundering of the proceeds of crime.
According to the ILDKPI, by that time, Gjoni had hidden over 2 million euros of assets, including a villa worth 700 thousand euros in Farka, purchased in 2012 with dubious sources. The sensational file was referred to the Elbasan Prosecutor's Office, which in May 2014 registered criminal proceedings no. 1098 for the offenses of "forgery of documents" and "concealment of assets".
Despite his history, Gjoni has regained public status as a member of parliament and, in recent statements, has positioned himself as one of the harshest critics of the justice system, especially towards the leaders of higher judicial institutions.
