Florian Haçkaj has reacted in strong tones on social media, criticizing those who have shown admiration for former Prime Minister Fatos Nano, as the latter is in serious health condition.
In a status accompanied by a photo of his great-grandfather, Eqerem Zeqja,'s villa in Tirana, Haçkaj recalled the history of his family, which according to him was persecuted and had its property confiscated by the communist regime in 1948.
"This in the photo is the house of my great-grandfather, Eqerem Zeqja! A wonderful villa built with sweat and hard work, which was occupied by the greedy communists in 1948. On that hateful day, my late grandmother returned home and found a few belongings and furniture loaded into a truck, along with family members who were deported after the torture of our great-grandfather," writes Haçkaj.
He adds that in 1951 the Nano family moved into this villa and Fatos Nano was born there in 1952. According to him, the property remained in the hands of the Nano family until the late 1990s, while any attempt to reclaim it after the fall of communism has been met with threats and arrogance.
“This is the legacy of communism: plunder, violence, deportations and injustice that continue to weigh down generations,” Haçkaj writes, adding that he feels “only one regret — that Nano and others like him never received the punishment they deserved for the communist past and for preserving old structures under the guise of democracy.”
In conclusion, he emphasizes:
"A people who forget their history are destined to experience it again."
