The 20th meeting of the Albania - European Union Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee was held today in Tirana, where issues of integration and respect for European standards in the country were discussed.
Also present at the roundtable was Greek MEP Fredi Beleri, who spoke in Greek and articulated a series of criticisms of Albania. He said that the country “needs a Greek university,” while raising concerns about the way Greek is taught in some Albanian schools.
"There is still no Greek university in Albania. In some schools where the Greek language is taught, there have been many problems, especially with textbooks that contain irredentist elements and unacceptable content under certain conditions," said Beleri.
He also spoke about the issue of religious freedom, emphasizing that "although Albania has made significant progress and harmonious coexistence between religions, the main problem remains the return of the properties of religious institutions, a process that has begun after 70 years."
In his speech, the Greek MEP also focused on territorial reform, describing the new division of Himara as "inappropriate to the demographic and ethnic composition of the area."
"Human rights are not only related to minorities, but to all Albanian citizens," he concluded.
