The leader of the Democratic Party of Albania, Sali Berisha, held a meeting today with the democrats in Kruja, as part of the mobilization for the protest announced on February 20. In his speech, Berisha called for participation in the protest and made strong accusations against the government, claiming that the media in the country are controlled by the government.
But the moment that stood out the most was his statement that the media situation today is worse than during the communist regime, where - according to him - citizens were more easily oriented thanks to alternative sources of information such as VOA, Vatican Radio or Italian televisions.
The irony of the situation lies in the fact that Berisha's meeting in Kruja itself was broadcast live by at least five television stations simultaneously, while his daily statements continue to be broadcast in real time by almost all audiovisual media in the country. While he spoke about a "occupied" media reality, the staging of his meeting was reflected directly on several screens.
During his speech, Berisha accused the government of using citizens' taxes for propaganda and that this, according to him, affects the deformation of the vote and the departure of Albanians from the country. He compared the situation in Albania with authoritarian models in the region, talking about the influence of crime and drug money in politics.
The meeting in Kruja served as another stage in the opposition's campaign for the February 20 protest.
