The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has held Edi Rama responsible for the events of January 21, 15 years ago, when four protesters were killed during an opposition protest.
Berisha stated that he was surrounded in his office that day and that bullets and stones were thrown at him, stressing that everything had been part of a political agenda driven by Rama. He added that during his government he had managed hundreds of protests without incident and that he had not abandoned his duties or taken protective measures, unlike what, according to him, is happening today.
According to Berisha, Rama is trying to use the victims of January 21 for personal and political interests, calling this “crocodile tears.” He said that he had testified in the prosecution and that the January 21 protest was the most violent in the country’s history, warned and organized on the basis of a forged document.
Berisha stressed that there are statements from the American government and international institutions that demand a full investigation of the event, from ordinary police officers to the main organizers. According to him, the case was investigated by the prosecution of the time, but without the courage to summon Rama, while today these files, as he expressed, are under review not only in SPAK, but also in international instances and public opinion.
