Judge Astrit Kalaja was killed as soon as he announced the verdict and was about to leave the courtroom. The suspected perpetrator was Elvis Shkëmbi, the nephew of Gjon Shkëmbi, who was a party to the trial.
He then shot at the opposing party in the trial, Rakip Kurtaj and Ervis Kurtaj.
Elvis Shkambi, the perpetrator of the murder of Judge Kalaja, has confessed to the crime at Police Station Number 1. He admitted to the murder, while saying that he shot the judge after losing a property case.
"I shot him because I was losing a trial. I was correct with my papers," he testified at Police Station Number 1.

At around 15:40, in the premises of the Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Tirana, during a court proceeding, it is suspected that citizen E. Sh., 30 years old (party to the proceedings) fired a firearm at the judge, citizen AK, and citizens RK, 65 years old and EK, 45 years old, his son (the other party to the proceedings).
As a result, citizen AK lost his life and citizens RK and E. K were injured, but their lives are out of danger.
Upon receiving the notification, the Police Services immediately went to the scene and made it possible to capture and escort to the premises of the Tirana Police Department, the suspected perpetrator, citizen E. Sh., and seized the crime weapon.
