The government today approved the draft law on Criminal Amnesty, an initiative that aims to ease the prison load and provide reintegration opportunities for convicted persons. According to official data, 447 people will benefit from immediate release, while 853 others will benefit from reduced sentences.
Among the beneficiaries are women, minors and foreign citizens, while the total number of people benefiting from the suspension of criminal prosecution is expected to be much larger.
From 2024, the amnesty will also include the cessation of criminal prosecution for around 14,000 proceedings for minor offences, as well as the amnesty of 5,077 prisoners sentenced to alternative measures. The aim is to ease the pressure on penitentiary institutions and focus justice only on cases of real social danger.
The amnesty bill will be submitted to the Assembly, where it will begin its review in parliamentary committees and then be passed for approval in a plenary session.
