The Constitutional Court took more time to announce a decision regarding judges' salaries. The eight constitutional judges gathered in the consultation room, but after two hours of discussion, they agreed that they need more time to review the issue, as they consider it complex.
The National Association and the Union of Judges moved the Constitutional Court claiming that their rights have been violated by the 2023 legal amendments, where their salary is referred to that of the President of the Republic. They claim that their salary should be referred to that of the Director General at the Prime Minister's Office, as foreseen in the 2016 legal amendments within the framework of the Justice reform. The magistrates claim that this is a right guaranteed to them by the Constitution.
Prime Minister Edi Rama says that judges are showing irresponsibility by demanding a salary increase, which would burden the state budget bill by 37 million euros per year.
