It was not a random bullet, nor a tragic accident. Fatos Cenaj, 58, was killed deliberately. There is a suspect in the murder and investigators have already ruled out all other leads. The path of revenge is being pursued, which is related to his past, when he was still living in Albania.
This is how the Italian daily "Il Mattino di Padova" begins its article, which has dedicated an article to the serious incident, dismantling the previous investigation leads and focusing on a new one.
This decisive turn in the investigation was provided by the footage of the security cameras in the area and the testimonies of those who knew Fatos. The Carabinieri of the Investigation Unit of the Provincial Command of Padova, led by the prosecutor Maria d'Arpa, have been trying for more than two months to reconstruct the event that occurred on June 8 on Casoni Basse Street, in the municipality of Fontaniva, where Cenaj was found seriously injured and in agony.
That morning, the 58-year-old, a retired former prison officer, was making his way from home to the arena as he always did on his tricycle, his only means of transportation. A few minutes later, a witness heard a shot. Shortly after, two fishing guards saw Fatos lying on the ground. Initially, it was thought that he had fallen accidentally. But it was only at the hospital that doctors discovered a gunshot wound to the head. After three days of fighting for his life, he passed away.
Investigators, from the beginning, began to investigate Cenaj's past. After a career as a prison officer in Albania, he had moved to Italy to be reunited with his wife and daughter. For two years, he had lived in Fontaniva, in a house that now remains empty. "After what happened, they chose to move in with a relative," said a neighbor. "They were afraid to stay there any longer."
However, in everyday life in Fontaniva, Fatos Cenaj did not give the impression of a man with enemies. The owner of the riding school near the house where he worked has always described him as a simple and good man, who performed small jobs and took loving care of the horses. He did not ask for anything, it was enough for him to feel useful.
Even in the manege, the carabinieri have returned several times, looking for traces or possible evidence. But no conflict, threat or open account related to his life in Italy has come to light. For this reason, the attention of investigators remains focused on the period when he lived in Albania. Italian authorities are working closely with Albanian ones to reconstruct his past. So far, family members, acquaintances and residents of the area have been questioned.
The investigations continue, but for investigators it is now certain: Fatos Cenaj was the victim of a deliberate, carefully planned murder, and most likely linked to an old unresolved score.
