Every day, Albania's roads record an average of five people involved in road accidents, some of whom lose their lives, while others are injured. Official data published by the Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) reveals a worrying situation: in the first half of the year, 636 road accidents occurred, resulting in the death or injury of 883 people.
The vast majority of accidents are caused by drivers. Of the total, 88 accidents were caused by pedestrians not following traffic rules.
Compared to previous years, the numbers show a persistent problem. Last year, there were 2,088 accidents, resulting in 175 fatalities, while in 2023, there were 1,539 accidents, resulting in 192 fatalities.
A surprising fact is that the most accidents are caused by drivers with long experience. According to INSTAT, those with more than 9 years of driving experience were responsible for 742 accidents last year, while those with less than 3 years of experience caused 296 accidents.
Due to the large flow of vehicles and people, Tirana remains the region with the highest number of accidents, followed by Lezha, Durrës and Fier. In contrast, Berat and Dibra report the lowest number of road accidents.
According to the data, Saturday is the most dangerous day for accidents, especially during the month of September, followed by Monday. Meanwhile, Wednesday and Sunday mark the lowest number of accidents.
