US Vice President JD Vance has warned Iran not to try to "play" with the United States, as he heads to Asia for negotiations aimed at ending the war between the two countries.
Vance left for Pakistan on Friday to lead brokered talks with Iran in the capital Islamabad. Speaking before boarding Air Force Two, he said the US administration expects the negotiations to be constructive.
"We are looking forward to the negotiations. I think they will be positive. Of course we will see," he said.
Vance also referred to Donald Trump's stance, adding that Washington is willing to negotiate if Tehran is serious.
"If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we are certainly willing to extend an open hand," he said.
However, the vice president warned that any attempt by Iran to manipulate the process will have consequences.
"But if they try to play along, then they will find that the negotiating team will not be willing to accept that at all."
Vance also said Trump has given the US team "very clear instructions" on how the talks should proceed, without providing further details. He declined to take questions from reporters traveling with him.
