Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the European Union to unite in light of wars and crises, as well as the protectionist policies of US President Donald Trump.
German news agency DPA reports that the former CDU leader spoke at a Konrad Adenauer Foundation symposium on the Lisbon Treaty and, while examining the geopolitical difficulties for Europe in relation to Russia or China, Merkel said she is thinking about what "a member state of the European Union can achieve" on these issues.
"We are all, even the economically largest Germany, completely alone in the open field. That is why Europe has become more important than one might think," Merkel added.
Merkel also said that the disadvantage of the Lisbon Treaty is that the European Convention must convene for major changes. "We as the European Union must be careful not to make it impossible for ourselves to act," she warned.
