Utah prosecutors have formally charged Tyler Robinson, 22, with aggravated murder in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Robinson is accused of firing a shotgun from a rooftop on the Utah Valley University campus last week, killing Kirk.
Utah District Attorney Jeffrey Gray said a total of seven charges have been filed, including obstruction of justice and witness tampering, after Robinson asked his roommate to delete the messages. Gray confirmed that his office will seek the death penalty, a decision it made “independently, based solely on the evidence and circumstances of the crime.”
The killing, recorded in videos widely shared online, has prompted condemnations of political violence from all sides, but also mutual political accusations. Authorities have yet to release a motive, while Kirk's supporters have hailed him as a "martyr to their cause."
