Our country's economy spent 135 billion lek (1.4 billion euros) on purchasing food abroad in the first 10 months of 2025, an increase of 3.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
On the other hand, although there is an increase in exports, figures show that domestic production is not covering the expansion of food consumption.
The data show an expansion in consumption, higher prices in international markets and a sustained dependence on imports for key food categories.
The strongest growth was recorded in the coffee, tea and spices group, where imports increased by 38%, reflecting rising global prices and expanding domestic consumption.
Also, edible fruits and nuts (+11.6%), dairy products and eggs (+12.2%), and prepared foods made from meat, fish and shellfish (+14.3%) have experienced significant growth. A strong increase is also observed in cocoa and its products (+10%).
In total, food imports increased by 3 billion lek (about 30 million euros), compared to 2024, confirming that Albania remains a market that relies on food consumption mainly on imported supplies.
Food imports in value are increasing for two main reasons: rising prices in international markets for some items such as coffee and cocoa, and on the other hand, increasing consumption, driven by tourists.
In the first 10 months of 2025, food imports were three times higher than exports for this group. High dependence on food imports makes the country more vulnerable to global prices, exchange rate fluctuations, and supply chain disruptions.
Higher imports reduce competitiveness and the incentive to produce domestically. Another consequence is a widening trade deficit.
Food security is also compromised, as supply disruptions can lead to shortages of basic products and price increases, while quality control becomes more difficult due to the large volume of imports.
Farmers believe that expanding agricultural production comes from applying fiscal incentives and supportive policies for domestic producers, including technology subsidies, low-interest loans, and training in modern agricultural management. This helps producers be more competitive and sustainable.
