In Albania, most people infected with HIV are diagnosed late, putting them at risk not only for transmitting the virus to others, but also for their own lives. Our country is ranked among the countries in Europe with the highest percentage of late diagnoses.
According to official data, 66.7% of HIV cases in Albania are detected in advanced stages, when treatment is more difficult and the prognosis is worse. This phenomenon, according to doctors, indicates a lack of testing, stigma and insufficient information.
The number of people infected has increased slightly in recent years. This year alone, 125 new cases have been registered, while nationwide there are nearly 2,000 people living with HIV.
Specialists emphasize that early diagnosis is key to preventing the spread and ensuring long-term survival, calling for more testing, awareness campaigns, and accessible treatment without stigma.
