An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck northwestern Greece, near the border with Albania, on Sunday morning. According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the tremor occurred at 05:32 local time, at a depth of about 5 kilometers.
The epicenter was located about 10 kilometers northwest of Lepokaria in the Thesprotia region, while the earthquake was felt in several areas of Epirus and Thessaly, as well as in southern Albania and on several islands of the Ionian Sea.
Several aftershocks were recorded after the main earthquake, including a 4.7 magnitude tremor and several others ranging from 2.4 to 3.5. According to seismologists, the relatively shallow depth of the earthquake made the tremors more strongly felt by residents in the area.
In the city of Ioannina and surrounding areas, many residents came out of their homes in fear, while in some areas there were temporary power outages. Greek authorities have announced that no serious damage has been reported so far.
The tremors were also felt in southern Albania, but so far there have been no reports of damage or problems for residents. In the meantime, experts are monitoring the situation due to the aftershocks that continue in the area.
