Tired of the dominance of two parties during the long transition period, where each has shown itself that the good of the nation and the citizens of the country has not been their priority during governance, and the lack of trust in the existing small parties, hope seems to lie in a new party.
"Monitor" organized a survey on its website, through the ERC platform ("Engaged Citizens Reporting" is a secure digital platform developed to narrow the gap between the media and the public).
The survey remained open for 5 days and was completed by 1114 citizens.
(We emphasize that this is not a representative sample of the Albanian population. Participants were not randomly selected and responses were given voluntarily, which means that people who have a stronger interest or stance on the topic are more likely to participate in the survey).
One of the questions was: "If the country goes to elections, who would you vote for?", to which 39.7% of respondents answered "A new party, which could emerge from the protests."
"I feel unrepresented, a new movement is needed to bring new life to the country," says a commentator in the 30-39 age group, with a postgraduate education, employed in the "Information and Communication" activity.
She has supported the protests because of the lack of perspective for the future, poor governance and lack of accountability, as well as youth emigration and depopulation. Another commentator from the same age group says that the existing parties “are not alternatives because they are part of the same 35-year-old mess.”
“We need a new political party, built on the values of Albanian society,” says a young man who works in support activities and services. A freelancer suggests that “a new party should emerge as a result of the protest, founded by professionals and academics within the country and the diaspora.”
"The time has come for real change. The way must be opened to young people, new ideas and people with integrity, who can serve the country with responsibility and vision. Hope for a fairer, more developed Albania with more opportunities for its citizens begins when they demand accountability and choose differently," says YM
There are also those who are skeptical. “If there is no structural change, party change is limited,” says a freelancer, aged 30-39. Another freelancer, aged 40-49, says he will vote “if the Electoral Code is changed.”
"I will not vote for the old parties, as they are the reason why we are in this situation today, let's see how the protests will conclude," says a Vlora entrepreneur, with a doctorate, aged 40-49.
Some respondents claim that they will choose a party based on the programs they will have.
"I will vote for the political entity that presents a political offer in line with the demands of citizens and demonstrates intellectual capacities and reliable human resources that can realize them," says a teacher from Tirana aged 40-49.
"Representation (of candidates) and the program are two of the points that will determine the selection of the party," says a respondent who works in the media.
The two traditional parties, the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party, have received very few votes, but of course this is not an indicator of the real preference of the population, which has a different demographic that includes retired voters, ordinary employees or those in agriculture, public administration, or other strata completely different from the audience that chose to express itself in this survey.
