Prime Minister Edi Rama today focused on security challenges, highlighting the risk of increased tensions in the region, especially in the Baltics, following interventions with Russian drones and fighter jets. He stated that Albania is under continuous cyber attacks from Iran, but according to him, the country has one of the strongest defenses in Europe.
"Regarding targeting for cyber attacks, we have today one of the strongest cyber defenses in Europe. Although we are still the target of an enemy, Iran, we are repelling them and they are not managing to break our cyber defenses," Rama said.
However, the head of government indirectly admitted that despite the protection he considers strong, the data of Albanian citizens – which by law must be stored by the government – is now exposed and accessible to anyone. This fact comes after the continuous publication of state databases on the internet in recent years, where sensitive information of citizens, from ID card numbers to salary data, has circulated without any hindrance.
Rama's statement comes at a time when cybersecurity remains one of the most sensitive topics for Albania, while attacks sponsored by foreign states are being accompanied by strong doubts about the inability of domestic institutions to protect citizens' privacy.
