The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted for a declaration paving the way for the creation of the state of Palestine. However, Albania, contrary to the position previously expressed by Prime Minister Edi Rama, abstained from the vote, not supporting either side.
In April of this year, during his visit to Israel, Prime Minister Rama emphasized that Albania supports the two-state solution.
"As I have said before, I want to repeat it now, Albania has always been supportive of the two-state solution," Rama said.
But instead of expressing this position in the last vote at the UN, Albania chose not to participate in supporting the declaration, abstaining and showing a neutral position. Apparently, the Albanian government is still not convinced about the massacre taking place in Gaza where thousands of children are not only being denied their state, but also their lives.
The seven-page declaration, which is the result of an international conference at the UN in July, hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, received 142 votes in favor, 10 against and 12 abstentions. The United States and Israel voted against.
The resolution also condemns Israel's attacks against civilians and infrastructure in Gaza, as well as the siege and starvation that have caused a humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis.
