In the first session of the new legislature, held this Friday, Niko Peleshi was elected Speaker of the Albanian Parliament. He received the support of the parliamentary majority with 84 votes in favor, while only three votes were against.
In a sign of protest, opposition MPs refused to use their ballots and threw anti-government placards into the ballot box. During the session, they also expressed their opposition symbolically by banging their hands on the tables.
