Protesters at the Spaç Mine in Mirdita appeared today at a hearing organized by the Human Rights Commission, where the situation of the workers and possible violations by the private company operating the mine were discussed. The President of the Confederation of Trade Unions, Kol Nikolli, said that the company not only does not accept the union, but is retaliating against the workers with psychological violence and unfairly extended working hours.
"The concessionaire started a rampant campaign of psychological violence, threatening them, calling them individually to the office. An incident occurred on the 5th, and he fired one of the main union activists on trivial pretexts, after he had worked about 16 hours. Because he has a 7-hour work system, as if it were the Academy of Sciences and not the Spaç mine. With the 3-shift system, you can't work 7 hours. But he uses the 7 hours to get them to work on Saturdays and keeps them working 14 hours, 16 hours," said Kol Nikolli, president of the Confederation of Trade Unions.
The hearing was held to review the employees' claims and to identify any possible violations of their rights by the concession company.
