Members of the Democratic Party in the Foreign Policy Committee have requested a hearing of the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, regarding a joint editorial recently published with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, addressing issues of the region's European integration process.
The editorial, published in a German media outlet, presents a proposal according to which the Western Balkan countries could be gradually integrated into the European Union's internal market and the Schengen Area, even without being full members of the union. According to the authors of this position, such an approach would enable faster economic and institutional inclusion of the countries of the region in European structures, creating a form of progressive integration before full membership.
However, the Democratic Party representatives in the committee have expressed their opposition to this approach, arguing that such a proposal contradicts the resolutions previously adopted by the Albanian Parliament, which define the country's full membership in the European Union as a strategic objective. In this context, they demand that the Prime Minister provide detailed explanations on the motives and goals of this initiative, as well as on the official position of the Albanian government regarding this proposal.
In the submitted request, the Democratic MPs also emphasize their concern about the impact that such an approach could have on the progress of Albania's European integration process, as well as the possible consequences it could bring in relation to the strategic interests of the country and Kosovo. According to them, any initiative that affects the strategic direction of integration should be discussed in a full and transparent manner in the relevant institutions.
