Sali Berisha has shown once again that, in order to have a foreigner at the Democratic Party headquarters, he is ready to change his position without batting an eyelid. After the meeting with Bundestag member Peter Beyer, the Democratic Party leader stated that he was concerned about the new justice system in Albania.
"Of course, I also recognized the great, serious, very great obstacles, the state of complete blockage of the justice system, the drug cartels and their enormous power due to connections at the highest levels and other difficulties that we face, but also our determination to continue the efforts in this country to realize the projects we have," said Berisha.
But this statement stands in stark contrast to his daily rhetoric. Just a day earlier, he had labeled the former head of SPAK as "Altin Troplini," while from his pulpits he never stops attacking SPAK, the institution that has become the symbol of the new justice system in Albania.
On the other hand, German MP Peter Beyer appeared more direct and honest in his stance, emphasizing the importance of a strong opposition for Albanian democracy.
"A strong Democratic Party and a strong opposition are essential for the future of democracy in this country. Therefore, we extend a hand of cooperation and offer our support. This, of course, is also related to the need for a very clear, transparent and open approach regarding the justice system in this country. We have talked about this and have considered what we can do more together for the improvement and for the benefit of Albanian citizens," said the German MP.
Beyer did not hide his personal admiration for MP Jorida Tabaku, now officially Sali Berisha's English translator during meetings with foreigners.
In the end, the meeting at the blue headquarters once again demonstrated a well-known phenomenon in Albanian politics: when a foreign diplomat enters the office, the rhetoric immediately changes. But as soon as the door closes, the rostrums return to attacks on justice and the institutions it represents.
