MP Fatmir Mediu has held a series of meetings at the State Department and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, where he has undertaken a major mission: to explain to the Americans how NATO should function and how the Balkans should be defended.
In meetings in Washington, Mediu called for alliance countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP and warned of the risk of reducing KFOR's presence in Kosovo. He also raised concerns about the growing influence of Russia and China in the region, stressing that the US should engage even more in the Balkans.
So, as the global superpower drafts its security strategies, an MP from Tirana travels to give it some friendly advice: more money for defense, more America in the Balkans, and more vigilance towards China.
The irony? While in Washington he talks about NATO security, in Albania Mediu is being sued by SPAK for the Gërdec tragedy, which is related precisely to the time when he was Minister of Defense.
In short: a politician who in his country has to explain a tragic explosion of weapons depots, in Washington gives lectures on how global security should be maintained.
