"We apologize for the offensive way in which a very noble law, fully in line with EU principles on gender equality and non-discrimination, has been misused to distort public perception, as well as for the way in which the EU Ambassador has been used for such a low purpose," Rama would declare at the conclusion of the vote on the much-discussed law a few weeks ago.
Protests against the draft law "on gender equality" were organized while the law was being discussed in a parliamentary session. Various associations and opposition MPs opposed its adoption.
Dozens of citizens, as well as representatives of various organizations and activists, gathered in front of the plenary session hall of the Albanian Parliament, as the plenary session was beginning.
With banners with inscriptions such as, "the gender equality bill is tantamount to anti-family", "There are only two genders, male and female", "Deputies, your vote today will go down in history", "Gender equality bill, hostility against faith", "Albanians against gender education in schools", the protesters called on the deputies not to vote for the bill.
"However, as we say in Albanian, let the dogs bark, the caravan moves forward," declared the Albanian Prime Minister.
Today, at the end of the decree deadline, the President remained silent and let the caravan go without making much noise.
