Sali Berisha's 1.4 million euro contract with American consultant Chris LaCivita will undergo an audit by the Central Election Commission. The same control is expected to be applied to the financial statements of the Socialist Party and other entities that participated in the May 11 parliamentary elections.
"This is still the initial phase, we cannot give an assessment of how political parties have spent during the campaign. We will conduct an audit to see the use of these funds and, moreover, the financing of political parties," stated the head of the CEC, Ilirjan Celibashi.
For now, the Commissioner's focus remains on Sunday's elections in five municipalities, following the annulment of the partial elections in Tirana by the Constitutional Court, which left Mayor Erion Veliaj in office.
"I don't know, no one knows if and when elections will be held in Tirana. But on November 9, elections will be held in five municipalities. The decision of the Constitutional Court is clear and we are obliged to implement it," Celibashi added.
Citizens of Vlora, Tepelena, Cerrik, Mati and Berat will head to the ballot boxes to elect a new mayor. The CEC has tested electronic identification devices and is ready for the partial electoral process in these five municipalities.
