Elections for mayors and representatives of municipal assemblies are being held in Kosovo today.
The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that polling stations in all municipalities of Kosovo will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. According to CEC data, 938 polling stations have been organized across the country with a total of 2,625 polling stations.
For citizens voting from abroad, voting by mail has been enabled, a process that began on September 17 and ended on October 11.
2 million 69 thousand 98 voters within Kosovo are eligible to vote, while around 44 thousand voters were registered to vote from abroad.
Local elections are held in all municipalities in Kosovo, including those with a Serb majority in the north of the country. For more than two years, North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic were led by Albanian mayors.
This followed the resignations of Serbian List representatives in November 2022, in protest against the decision of Kosovo authorities to remove Serbian vehicle license plates from circulation.
In April 2023, northern Serbs – following the instructions of the Serbian List – boycotted the extraordinary municipal elections.
There was another boycott a year later, in April 2024, during the vote to dismiss Albanian mayors.
In today's elections, the Serbian List has candidates for mayor in all ten municipalities with a Serb majority: North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavić, Zubin Potok, Gračanica, Štrpce, Novo Brdo, Kllokot, Partesh and Ranillug, as well as in Obiliq.
Several other Serbian parties also have candidates in municipalities with a Serb majority: the Party for Freedom, Justice and Survival, Serbian Democracy, Serbian People's Movement, the Alliance of Kosovo, as well as several civic initiatives.
Kosovo institutions and international missions have called on citizens to vote freely and without external influence./rel
