After a long silence, the High Judicial Council finally reacts to the attacks that the prime minister has made against several judges, but does not dare to mention Edi Rama's name.
In its press release, the High Judicial Council (HJC) emphasizes the importance of the independence of the judiciary and the demand for respect for this principle by all public and private actors. However, the HJC does not directly mention the name of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has been the focus of recent criticism of the judicial system.
The announcement states that "such statements harm the image and dignity of judges and undermine the independence of the judiciary." A lukewarm reaction, this institution reminds, but does not specifically tell, that in every democratic society, judges are guarantors of equality of parties before the law and must exercise their function independently, only under the Constitution and the laws.
Therefore, in the part that should mention names, the Supreme Court writes that it calls on public and private entities to respect this independence and to challenge judicial decisions only through the legal means provided, by directing complaints and claims to the relevant institutions.
At the end of the announcement, the Council underlines that in a state governed by the rule of law, which today aspires to become part of the European Union, only an independent judicial system can ensure effective justice and public trust.
