The Supreme Court will examine on October 9, 2025 in a consulting room the appeal filed by the former President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, who requests the lifting of the security measure "prison arrest" imposed on him by the GJKKO and subsequently upheld by the Special Appeal.
Meta has been in prison since October 21, 2024, when the security measure against him was executed following investigations conducted by SPAK for a series of criminal offenses, including passive corruption, money laundering, and concealment or false declaration of assets.
The investigations have focused mainly on two sensational files: the "CEZ-DIA" affair, where Meta is suspected of favoring the company "DIA" through illegal influence, and the lobbying case in the US, where he and his wife, Monika Kryemadhi, are accused of using undeclared funds and money laundering.
The defense has argued that the legal conditions no longer exist to keep Meta in custody, as the investigations have been closed and the risk of evidence tampering or witness tampering no longer exists. They are seeking a lighter security measure, such as house arrest or mandatory reporting.
On the other hand, SPAK has stood by its claims, emphasizing that the current measure is necessary for the smooth running of the process and to guarantee that the former president will not hinder the full clarification of the case.
The Supreme Court's decision is being awaited with great interest, as it could have direct political consequences, especially at a time when the opposition is on the verge of organizing protests and local by-elections.
