The head of the DP Parliamentary Group accuses the prime minister that legal interventions aim at personal political immunity, not protection of the deputy prime minister.
The head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Gazment Bardhi, has reacted to the changes proposed by the Socialist Party to the Criminal Procedure Code, accusing Prime Minister Edi Rama of intending to establish a "shield" for himself in front of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).
In a public reaction, Bardhi ironically states that "for the first time" he believes the prime minister when he says that the changes are not related to the suspended and indicted deputy prime minister by SPAK, Belinda Balluku, but according to him, they are directly related to Rama's personal interest.
According to Bardhi, the proposed changes aim to prevent the prime minister from being suspended from office even if the judiciary assesses that he could influence or destroy evidence during an investigation. The Democrat MP cites as examples the Charles McGonigal case and the incinerator investigations, which, according to him, are still in progress.
"His goal is personal. He wants the function of Prime Minister not to be separated from the name of Edi Rama, despite the evidence of justice against him," Bardhi is quoted as saying.
He adds that the changes to the legislation, proposed in the midst of an active criminal investigation into the deputy prime minister, set a precedent and aim to prepare the ground for possible future cases.
