The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, accused Prime Minister Edi Rama that the latest proposed legal changes are aimed at his personal protection and that of officials involved in corruption affairs.
In a statement to the media, Berisha said that the proposed amendments aim, according to him, to "destroy the justice system" and protect members of the government from investigations.
He emphasized that the suspension of officials from duty is a constitutional right of the prosecution and the courts, which serves to protect the public interest and the lawful functioning of institutions.
"Edi Rama, to protect his monstrous crimes and untold thefts, is moving on to other actions, to the annihilation of the justice system, to the adoption of laws to protect himself and his looting gang in government," he said.
The DP leader also attacked the new head of AKSHI, Igli Tafa, whom he described as being connected to the prime minister's close circle.
The chief democrat called on citizens to join the February 20 protest to overthrow, as he called it, "the most kleptocratic system Albania has known."
