Sali Berisha faced today the first public opposition from the Democratic Party base regarding the preferred candidate of the united opposition for the Municipality of Tirana, actor Florian Binaj.
During a meeting with the capital's democrats, the atmosphere became tense when one of them spoke openly and without gloves in front of the DP leader, expressing clear dissatisfaction with the idea of Binaj's candidacy.
The elderly democrat addressed Berisha bluntly and bluntly:
"We want a candidate for the Municipality of Tirana. We can't wait until the end. Either put forward a political candidate, or give up and let Florian Binaj take it. But we have nothing to do with Florian Binaj. We want a political candidate. If Florian Binaj and company fall to us, I will be the first to not vote for them."
This stance reflects a concern that seems to be spreading among the DP base in Tirana: the fear that the opposition could go to the elections with a non-partisan figure, while a part of the Democrats are looking for a candidate with a clear political profile.
What stood out was Berisha's own reaction. Known for his tendency to respond to any criticism, this time he did not debate, object, or argue. He simply interrupted the democrat with two words: "Next."
This unusual silence by the DP leader hinted that the tension surrounding Florian Binaj's name is deeper than it appears publicly and that the issue of the candidate for Tirana remains open, fragile and debatable within the opposition itself.
