Sali Berisha, at today's press conference, officially requested the Constitutional Court to schedule a public hearing to review the request submitted by Prime Minister Edi Rama, regarding the suspension of the GJKKO decision on Belinda Balluku. Berisha described this process as "the most serious and darkest case in the history of European jurisprudence", emphasizing that "never before has a head of government intervened in this way".
During the statement, Berisha came to the defense of the members of the Constitutional Court, asking them to “decompose Edi Rama’s pressures.” He called on the judicial body not to allow, according to him, the executive branch to influence the country’s highest constitutional decision-making.
But today's defense contrasts with Berisha's previous positions. Just a few weeks ago, he himself articulated strong accusations against the Constitutional Court judges, sometimes nominally, sometimes against the entire court body as a whole.
The DP leader also stated that there is no legal basis for the request submitted by Prime Minister Rama to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court. According to him, the court "should consider null" the government's request, as it does not meet the criteria provided by law for consideration.
Berisha described the entire procedure as a "dangerous precedent" that aims, according to him, to undo a lawful decision of the GJKKO and create an unacceptable standard in the relationship between the powers.
