Former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj has reacted on social media after reports that the Ministry of Justice has submitted a request for his extradition from Switzerland. He denied that a “new request” has occurred and explained that the process for his extradition has been underway for over two years, while a “pseudo-transfer” has been under investigation for over a year.
Ahmetaj accused the government of manipulating public opinion.
"The noise deliberately initiated by the regime is intended to divert attention from recent mega-scandals and from collaboration with organized crime and drug cartels," he writes.
He also linked his reaction to recent developments in justice, mentioning the indictment of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku by SPAK for the Llogara tunnel affair.
In one of his posts, Ahmetaj explains that the transfer being investigated has been going on for over a year and there was no real transfer between him and any businessman.
"The extradition request was made by the Ministry of Justice on August 18, 2023 and the law allows for the submission of only one request, therefore there is no "new request". The pseudo-transfer that is being investigated is over a year old and there was no real transfer between him and any businessman. The fake news, according to Ahmetaj, aims to shift attention from government scandals and alleged collaboration with organized crime," he writes.
Ahmetaj warned that more details will be published in the future, leaving further developments on the issue open.
