Ilir Meta is filing a new request to replace the security measure of "arrest with prison." The request was filed today by the former president's lawyers, claiming that there are no longer any circumstances to maintain detention.
According to the lawyers, he has been held in pre-trial detention for 16 months and, given that the investigation has been completed and the preliminary hearing is nearing its end, the security measure should be replaced by a lighter prison sentence. Recently, Ilir Meta has filed several requests for the mitigation of the measure, and his request is expected to be reviewed by the Constitutional Court in April.
On Thursday of this week, the Special Court is expected to conclude its preliminary hearing and decide on the fate of the Meta-Kryemadhi case. The former president is accused of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets in collaboration with his ex-wife Monika Kryemadhi and three other defendants. Ilir Meta has denied all the SPAK accusations.
