The Tirana Court ordered the security measure of arrest in prison for Elvis and Gjon Shkambi, suspected of the murder of judge Astrit Kalaja in the courtroom of the Appeal Court. Lawyer Kujtim Ibro stated that Elvis Shkambi expressed deep remorse and apologized to the family of judge Kalaja.
"Elvis Shkambi said he committed the murder in a state of severe psychological shock after facing injustice from the courts for years over property issues," the lawyer said. Ibro said that Shkambi carried the weapon after working in physical security institutions. But he admitted that the weapon was without a permit. As for Banush Koxhaj, the security guard accused of abuse of office, the lawyer said that he was sick when his uncle and nephew entered the court. "Banush Koxhaj suffers from diabetes and has requested permission from the chancellor, but they have replaced him," the lawyer stressed.
The security guard stated in the courtroom that "I was sick, before the parties went through the scanner, I informed the chancellor that I was not feeling well, as I suffer from diabetes. An hour later, the chancellor gave me permission to leave, but I was not replaced," he said.
Koxhaj was also remanded in custody.
