An unusual event has occurred in Greece, where four police officers have been placed in handcuffs by order of the prosecutor's office, following the escape of a Turkish prisoner under dramatic circumstances.
According to the authorities, the prisoner was being transported from Korydallos prison to the city of Mytilene on the passenger ship “Ariadni”. During the journey in the maritime area between Chios and Oinousses, he managed to escape the surveillance of the police and, although handcuffed, jumped into the sea.
It is learned that the prisoner was lying on the floor of the ferry under the supervision of four officers. With a sudden action, he quickly stood up and took advantage of a moment of carelessness when a citizen opened the door leading to the deck. This gave him the opportunity to reach the edge of the ship and jump into the water.
The prisoner was arrested on 7 July 2025 by the Lesvos port authorities for involvement in migrant smuggling. He was being taken to Mytilene for a hearing. Immediately after the incident, the captain stopped the ship's engines and launched a search operation in cooperation with the Coast Guard, but efforts to locate him were unsuccessful.
Investigations are ongoing, while the police officers responsible for guarding it are already facing legal consequences for this serious security failure.
