Yesterday, a serious incident occurred inside Domokos Prison in Greece, where prisoner Antonis Papadatos was shot dead.
Greek media write that the incident occurred in the same room where Albanian Alket Rizai, whose name has been mentioned many times in Greece for his sensational prison escapes, was also located.
This event has raised serious questions about security protocols at the prison, which is considered among the safest in Greece.
The investigation is being conducted by the Homicide Investigation Unit of the Organized Crime Directorate, while authorities are trying to unravel how a firearm managed to enter the prison premises and how several dangerous prisoners found themselves in the same space as the chief guard. According to information from the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Papadatos, sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a businessman in Zakynthos, entered the prison cell armed with a pistol with the intention of attacking the prison chief.
In addition to Alket Rizai and the victim, there was another prisoner in the same room, a Bulgarian citizen sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of businessman Yannis Makris in 2018 in Voula.
Authorities are investigating how the gun got into a high-security prison and why the prisoners were in that room at 6:45 p.m., when they should have been in their cells.
Also a mystery remains how the victim passed three checkpoints that are only opened by guards and why there were no cameras at the scene of the murder, even though the surrounding corridors are equipped with surveillance systems.
Greek media also report that the police chief was in the process of resigning at the request of the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy for improper performance of duty, but his replacement had not yet been appointed. The case is being examined by the organized crime prosecution, while at the Hellenic Police headquarters in Katehaki the climate is reportedly tense as the incident is considered an indicator of a serious security problem in the penitentiary system.
