The candidate for US ambassador to Albania, Eric Wendt, praised the work of SPAK during a hearing in the US Senate, describing the institution as "apolitical, independent and successful".
During the hearing, Wendt answered senators' questions regarding SPAK's impact on strengthening the rule of law, improving the investment climate, and fighting organized crime in Albania. He stated that, based on the information he has reviewed and his previous experience in the country, SPAK has demonstrated professionalism and independence in the exercise of its duties.
"SPAK, from everything I have read, has been an apolitical, independent and successful organization," Wendt said during the session.
He stressed that SPAK prosecutors are subject to strict verification procedures, including the vetting process and other security checks. According to him, the institution cooperates closely with international partners, especially the United States and European countries.
Wendt also noted the importance of the National Bureau of Investigation and special courts, considering them key links in the fight against corruption and organized crime.
The ambassadorial candidate underlined that, if confirmed in office, he will support the continuation of SPAK's work, emphasizing that maintaining the institution's independence is essential for increasing transparency, strengthening the business climate, and increasing investor confidence in Albania.
He also added that cooperation between US authorities and SPAK has yielded concrete results in the investigation and prosecution of persons involved in international criminal activities.
