In Përmet, construction of a new information center is ongoing near the natural monument of the “City Stone”, one of the most famous symbols of the city. The project was initiated by the former Minister of Culture and MP for the area, Mirela Kumbaro, but has caused strong reactions in the community.
According to critics, the construction is taking place within the protected area of the natural monument, violating the law on the protection of natural heritage. The residents of Përmet have openly opposed this project, calling it unnecessary and harmful to the landscape and natural identity of the area. They point out that there is already a functional tourist information center in the city center, as well as several other points in the surrounding areas, which makes this investment unnecessary.
Meanwhile, the works have continued despite objections, while the authorities have not yet given a clear position on the legality and impact of this construction on the protected natural monument of Përmet.
